Does CBD Help with Nausea?

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is becoming increasingly popular as a treatment for many ailments, including nausea. So what is CDB and how can it help with nausea? Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is one of the primary active components in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which causes a high when consumed, CBD does not cause any psychoactive effects. It has been used for decades to treat symptoms related to chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety, and depression.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD works by binding to specific receptors in the brain that regulate body functions. These receptors are found throughout the body and are involved in processes like managing pain perception and stress levels. By binding to these receptors, CBD can reduce inflammation and block certain chemicals that cause feelings of nausea. Studies have shown that CBD may be effective against acute and chronic nausea due to its antiemetic properties. In one study conducted on rats with chemotherapy-induced nausea, those who received CBD injections had significantly less vomiting compared to those who did not receive any treatments at all. Additionally, another study conducted on humans with morphine-induced nausea found similar results; those receiving oral doses of CBD experienced significant reductions in vomiting frequency compared to those who did not receive any medications.

Additional Benefits

Aside from its antiemetic effects, there is additional evidence that suggests that CBD may be beneficial for other types of nausea such as postoperative or anticipatory nausea. Postoperative nausea occurs after surgery and can be especially difficult to manage due to the onset of anesthesia during surgery. Studies have shown that preoperative administration of low doses of CBD may be able to reduce postoperative nausea. Additionally, anticipatory nausea is commonly associated with anxiety disorders and phobias. Studies suggest that administering small doses of CBD prior to exposure may help reduce anticipatory symptoms such as nausea.

What You Need to Know

Overall, CBD does appear to have potential therapeutic benefits when it comes to reducing symptoms of acute and chronic nausea. However, further studies need to be conducted in order to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of using this type of medication. Therefore, if you’re considering taking cannabidiol as a treatment option for dealing with your own issues related to stomach upset, make sure you speak with your doctor first before starting any new therapies or medications.
